Spend an Hour with a Dog, Make a Difference for a Life

January 27th, 2011
One Tail at a Time is now a rescue partner in saving dogs that have been relinquished to Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) and have been admitted into Safe Humane Chicago’s Court Case Dog Program.  Since One Tail does not have a shelter space of our own for volunteers to regularly visit, we’re joining forces with Safe Humane Chicago to assist with caring for Court Case Program dogs that are still awaiting rescue.

Volunteers will work with Court Case Program dogs like Pudge, Dimple, Raisinette, and Sandy who can then be placed in homes.

The Court Case Dog Program started in January 2010 through the efforts of Chicago Animal Care and Control, Best Friends Animal Society, D.A.W.G. Court Advocacy and Safe Humane Chicago. These organizations sought to establish a more compassionate and dog-friendly approach to a serious problem. Some of these Court Case Dogs were held at CACC for two years or more.

Who are “Court Case Dogs”?
Court Case Dogs have been relinquished (voluntarily or by court order) by defendant owners charged with animal abuse or neglect of all kinds and housed at CACC.

What does the Court Case Dog Program do?
This program assesses each dog behaviorally and provides appropriate candidates with a protocol of socialization, training and enrichment. The ultimate goal is to find homes for these animals.

Why is a program needed for Court Case Dogs?
Previously, dogs associated with court cases were routinely euthanized when relinquished or after a guilty outcome in their owners’ court cases. They should be assessed individually. The dogs in this program are not “damaged goods,” but victims of thoughtless or inhumane owners and a court system that then leaves them impounded in cages for needlessly long periods. These dogs deserve to be given the chance of life in a home.

How can you help the Court Case Dogs?
The dogs in this program have proven themselves to be emotionally resilient and have earned the chance of life outside the walls of CACC. We are looking for anyone interested in providing a second chance to dogs who have “done the time but not the crime.”  Volunteers will be trained to handle the pups, some of whom have been in their cages without even a walk for nearly two years, and work with them on socialization.  Volunteers will also help with bathing the dogs and otherwise work with them to become adoptable.

Two volunteer orientation sessions have been scheduled at CACC.

Saturday, February 5th 12:30pm – 1:30pm
Saturday, February 26th 12:30pm – 2:30pm
2741 S. Western Ave, Chicago

Both sessions will consist of a volunteer orientation, meeting with the Court Case Dog Program trainers, a tour of CACC, and a chance to meet some of the dogs we’ll be working with.  You are more than welcome to come to both sessions.  Those who come on the 5th will have a chance to work more with the dogs on the 26th.  Additional volunteering dates will be scheduled monthly beginning in March.

Email AndreaOTAT@gmail.com to sign up. RSVP is required to attend.

Margot is missing!

August 12th, 2010

Our girl Margot, the cattle dog that was on the loose for 6 months, is once again missing in Chicago.

She was spotted previously in Humboldt Park just north of Division between Humboldt Blvd and Kedzie.  On Monday, August 9th she was spotted near Elston and Augusta going into an overgrown, fenced off lot across from a Yellow Cab company lot.

We need your help in spreading the word to any and all contacts you have in the Goose Island, Noble Square, East Village, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, Humboldt Park, and Logan Square areas. Please post this flyer around your area or email it to anyone you know that can help!  Download the flyer by clicking here.

We found out where she was last time through a chain of people that ultimately led to one of our postings that someone had seen.  All sighting reports have been through flyers.  Spreading the word really does make a difference, so please do anything you’re able to help!
