Finance/Accounting Manager, One Tail at a Time

Location: Chicago, IL
Position Type: Full-time, hybrid
Salary: Starting at $50,000-$60,000 (based upon experience)
Start Date: Ongoing

One Tail at a Time is seeking to hire its first Finance/Accounting team member! This newly created position will work closely with the organization’s Executive Director, Development Director, and Board to deliver timely and accurate reporting. The Finance/Accounting Manager is responsible for maintaining the general ledger, executing regular close procedures, assisting with financial planning and forecasting processes, and performing analysis.



  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes for One Tail at a Time
  • Prepare monthly journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Own budgeting and forecasting processes in conjunction with the Board and fundraising
  • Oversee all financial statements with a focus on cash flow management
  • Process Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable payments
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll and payroll updates
  • Track expenditures and revenues by function, activity, and donation restrictions
  • Work with the Board to ensure a clean and timely year end audit
  • Use QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel to track and manage financial data
  • Create monthly Board of Directors Financial Reports
  • Set up tracking systems for income and grants
  • Record income and deposits
  • Manage bill pay and reimbursements


Required Qualifications:

  • Self-starter, with strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • 4+ years experience in finance or accounting
  • Sound understanding of US GAAP and month-end close processes
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience/proficiency in QuickBooks or similar software is required
  • Nonprofit experience is preferred
  • A love for working with both people and pets
  • Positive outlook and sense of humor
